Raramente encontraremos uma banda tão zelosa com o seu legado quanto o King Crimson. O guitarrista Robert Fripp, o líder e mentor, sempre meticuloso e controlador, sempre mostrou, ao contrário dessas características, um desprendimento tão grande na hora de compartilhar o que de melhor a sua banda produziu em 51 anos de existência.
O resultado é uma profusão de lançamentos dos mais variados, incluindo CDs duplos extraídos de gravações pitaras e caixas gigantescas retratando períodos importantes dessa trajetória, como os mais de 20 CDs que compõem uma versão pra colecionadores do álbum “Lark’ s Tongues in Aspic”.
O projeto atual é uma megacaixa contendo tudo o que foi registrado da banda inglesa no sagrado ano de 1969, o ano e fundação. São 20 CDs, dois DVDs e quatro Blu-Rays, tudo de tirar o fôlego.
“The Complete 1969 Recordings” é um projeto tão ambicioso, tão fenomenal, que suscita especulações sobre a sanidade mental de quem colocou tal coisa no mercado.
A coisa é tão suculenta que inclui a cobiçada gravação do primeiro show da carreira do King Crimson, ocorrido em 5 de julho de 1969, abrindo simplesmente para os Rolling Stones, que fizeram um concerto gratuito no Hyde Park, em Londres.
Outra boa surpresa é o resgate de um CD que mostra Fripp antes do Crimson, integrando o trio maluco Giles, Giles & Fripp, onde as primeiras ideias do que seria a sua banda principal e obra máxima foram esboçadas. Há também versoes com mixagens diferentes do primeiro álbum, “In the Court of Crimson King”.
Sete CDs de performances ao vivo melhoradas sonoramente já valem o investimento pesado, alguns provenientes de gravações piratas do público, outros de fitas cassete da placa de som, abrangem oito datas em seis locais.
O show ao vivo do Hyde Park, encabeçado pelos Rolling Stones para 650.000 pessoas em 5 de julho de 1969, inclui um conjunto relativamente curto de sete canções (e, anexado ao CD, um reunião de reunião dos membros originais da banda em Londres, 1997).
Sete faixas representam o show ainda mais incendiário do grupo na noite seguinte, no local menor, mas histórico, The Marquee. Seis canções são tiradas de uma apresentação de 9 de agosto no Festival de Plumpton, enquanto um conjunto mais longo de dez canções vem do Chesterfield’s Jazz Club em 6 de setembro, distribuídas em dois CDs e retiradas de uma fonte pelo menos uma geração melhor do que as versões anteriores.
Finalmente, dezoito faixas selecionadas de duas noites no Fillmore East de Nova York e mais duas no Fillmore West de São Francisco, gravadas em 21 e 22 de novembro e 13 e 14 de dezembro, respectivamente, ambas vêm de gravações de mesa de som de alta qualidade.
Cinco canções gravadas para a BBC a partir de duas gravações / transmissões separadas também estão incluídas em um CD separado, retirado de algumas fontes diferentes.
O mesmo disco também inclui uma gravação muito baixa-fi, mas importante para o arquivo, de “Trees”, gravada em 17 de outubro de 1969, em Croydon’s Fairfield Halls. Parte de “Trees” mais tarde seria extirpada e remodelada em uma música trovejante com inflexão jazz, inicialmente intitulada “A Man, A City”.
Tocada ao vivo por King Crimson durante sua turnê americana de outono de 1969, a canção foi finalmente afiada ainda mais e renomeada como “Pictures of a City”, para ser posteriormente gravada In the Wake of Poseidon (Panegyric, 1970).
“The Complete 1969 Recordings” também inclui seis CDs completos de sessões de gravação de Morgan e Wessex Studios, realizadas entre 12 de junho e 13 de agosto de 1969, junto com o CD “Let’s Make a Hit Waxing”.
