Entre os expoentes mais queridos do “Canterbury Sound” — aquela vertente específica do rock psicodélico britânico — está o grupo inovador Caravan.
Pense no extremismo de vanguarda do King Crimson, na rebeldia do punk e a liberdade libertária do jazz fusion e então teremos um caldo fervilhante do que se tornou o “Canterburty Sound”
Quem disse que não poderia haver ativismo e engajamento no rock progressivo, ainda mais com certo vié de esquerda (ok, isso talvez seja um pouco de exagero)? O Caravan é mais um representante do tal “rock progressivo alternativo” e terápartede suaobra revisitada na reedição da caixa “The Decca/Deram Years (An Anthology) 1970-1975”.
A banda foi formada em Canterbury em 1968 (a partir dos remanescentes do grupo de soul The Wilde Flowers) e contou, em vários momentos, com Pye Hastings na guitarra e vocais, Richard Sinclair no baixo e vocais, Dave Sinclair nos teclados e Richard Coughlan na bateria.
No ano seguinte, a banda garantiu um contrato com a gravadora Decca e estava gravando seu primeiro álbum de longa duração para o selo: “If I Could Do It All Over Again, I’d Do It All For You”, que compõe o primeiro disco do monumental novo box set da UMC que celebra os heróis de Canterbury: “The Decca/Deram Years (An Anthology) 1970-1975”.
Com lançamento previsto para amanhã, 6 de setembro, o conjunto de 9 CDs apresenta toda a obra de estúdio da banda pelos selos Decca e Deram. Isso inclui a já mencionada estreia na gravadora, além de “In the Land of Grey and Pink” (1971), “Waterloo Lily” (1972), “For Girls Who Grow Plump in the Night” (1973), o álbum ao vivo “Caravan & The New Symphonia” (1974) e “Cunning Stunts” (1975).
Cada álbum de estúdio é complementado por faixas bônus, incluindo demos raras, sobras de gravação, versões instrumentais, versões preliminares, mixagens alternativas e muito mais.
Além do material de estúdio, “The Decca/Deram Years” também traz dois registros ao vivo: “Live at the Fairfield Halls, 1974” e uma coletânea de dois discos com gravações de rádio intitulada “The Show of Our Lives: Live at the BBC, 1970-1975”.
Ao todo, “The Decca/Deram Years (An Anthology) 1970-1975” promete ser uma coleção abrangente que sintetiza toda uma era, com uma apresentação de luxo.
Cada álbum vem em uma embalagem digipak do tipo gatefold (com abertura dupla), exibindo a arte original do disco. Estes envelopes vêm acondicionados em um estojo luxuoso, acompanhado de um ensaio de 44 páginas que detalha a vida e a arte do grupo definitivo do “Canterbury Sound”.
