Pouquíssimas pessoas conhecem o termo “rock progressivo alternativo”. É uma classificação relativamente recente para um grupo de bandas e artistas britânicos que não atingiram o mesmo sucesso daquelas do primeiro time do subgênero – Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, Emerson, Lake and Palmer…
Aliando arte, cultura e política, um grupo de bandas quase formou uma espécie de “movimento” na Inglaterra como forma de se contrapor ao mundo corporativo musical e artístico dos anos 70. Não durou muito, já que havia uma tendência de rotula o “Movimento” como de esquerda, com uma liderança dos engajados membros do grupo Henry Cow.
Em um mundo mais real, esse rock progressivo alternativo tinha como representantes as bandas Camel, Caravan, Mahavishnu Orchestra e algumas outras tão boas quanto.
O Camel é o mais curioso e revolucionário desse patamar underground.. Liderado pelo guitarrista Andy Latimer, um estilista do instrumento e um intelectual do rock alternativo. Ao estilo do Kimg Crimson, o Camel está reeditando uma megacaixa com 27 CDs com quase toda a discografia e material inédito e raro.
“Air Born: The MCA & Decca Years 1973-1984”é uma caixa que reúne a obra da banda.
Marcando os 50 anos do lançamento de seu álbum de estreia homônimo, esta coleção de 27 discos traz versões recém-remasterizadas de todos os álbuns e *singles* do Camel lançados entre 1973 e 1984.
O produto também apresenta novas versões em estéreo dos álbuns “Camel”, “Mirage”, “Music Inspired by the Snow Goose”, “Moonmadness” e “Nude”, além de mixagens inéditas de três apresentações ao vivo: The Marquee Club (Londres, 1974), Hammersmith Odeon (1976) e Hammersmith Odeon (1977).
E não é só isso: “Air Born” traz, pela primeira vez, sobras de estúdio das gravações dos álbuns e as participações da banda no programa *BBC in Concert* nos anos de 1974, 1975, 1977 e 1981.
O Camel nunca alcançou a popularidade de massa de outras bandas britânicas de rock progressivo, como o Alan Parsons Project, mas conquistou uma base de fãs dedicada e fiel. Ao longo de sua trajetória, o Camel passou por inúmeras mudanças, mas Andrew Latimer permaneceu como líder da banda durante todos esses anos.
Formado em 1971 em Surrey, o Camel era composto originalmente por Latimer (guitarra, flauta, vocais), Andy Ward (bateria), Doug Ferguson (baixo) e o tecladista Peter Bardens (ex-integrante do Them).
No final de 1973, o grupo assinou com a gravadora MCA e lançou seu álbum de estreia homônimo. Em 1974, a banda mudou de gravadora, assinando com a Gama (subsidiária da Decca), e lançou “Mirage”.
Em 1975, o Camel lançou o álbum que marcaria sua ascensão “The Snow Goose”, que chegou ao Top 30 britânico. O público inglês da banda diminuiu com o lançamento de “Moonmadness” (1976), mas o álbum obteve mais sucesso nos Estados Unidos, alcançando a 118ª posição — a melhor colocação da banda nas paradas americanas até então.
Após o lançamento de “Moonmadness”, Ferguson deixou a banda e foi substituído por Richard Sinclair (ex-Caravan); simultaneamente, o grupo incorporou o saxofonista Mel Collins. Latimer e Bardens entraram em conflito durante as gravações de “Rain Dances” (1977), e essas tensões atingiram o auge durante a produção de “Breathless” (1978).
Com a conclusão de “Breathless”, Bardens deixou a banda. Antes de gravar o álbum seguinte, o Camel substituiu Bardens por dois tecladistas — Kit Watkins (Happy the Man) e Jim Schelhaas (Caravan) — e trocou Sinclair por Colin Bass.
Quando o Camel lançou seu álbum de 1979, “I Can See Your House From Here”, o cenário do rock havia sido transformado pelo surgimento do punk rock, o que resultou em menor cobertura da imprensa sobre o rock progressivo e na queda das vendas de discos. O Camel sofreu com essa mudança na preferência do público: “I Can See Your House From Here” recebeu menos atenção do que qualquer outro lançamento da banda desde a sua estreia. Latimer voltou a compor álbuns conceituais com “Nude”, de 1981.
Em 1982, o baterista Andy Ward foi forçado a deixar a banda após sofrer uma lesão grave na mão. O álbum do Camel de 1982, “The Single Factor”, apresentava uma sonoridade mais polida e acessível do que os discos anteriores da banda, mas não chegou a entrar nas paradas de sucesso. *Stationary Traveller* (1984) foi mais um álbum conceitual.
Após o lançamento do álbum ao vivo de 1984, “Pressure Points”, o Camel entrou em um longo período de inatividade que durou até o início dos anos 90.
Em 1985, a gravadora Decca dispensou o Camel de seu elenco. Latimer não conseguiu encontrar uma nova gravadora porque estava envolvido em uma difícil batalha judicial com o ex-empresário da banda, Geoff Jukes; o Camel acabou vencendo o processo no final dos anos 80. Durante esse período, a banda não produziu músicas novas.
Em 1988, Latimer vendeu sua casa na Inglaterra e mudou-se para a Califórnia, onde fundou o selo independente Camel Productions.
Quando o Camel gravou o sucessor de “Stationary Traveller” no início dos anos 90, a banda era, na prática, apenas Andrew Latimer e alguns músicos de estúdio. “Dust and Dreams” (1991) foi o primeiro lançamento pela Camel Productions.
Em 1993, a PolyGram lançou uma retrospectiva do Camel em disco duplo, intitulada “Echoes”. No início de 1996, o Camel lançou “Harbour of Tears”.
